Recovering Lost Metamask Wallets

Reconstructing Deleted and Reinitialised Metamask Wallets

We’ve recently had several enquiries from users with MetaMask accounts who have lost access to their coins and NFTs in their wallets. Fortunately, we’ve found that in many cases it is possible to recover these accounts and three examples are below – please read on for more.

Case 1 – Lost seed words & re-installed MetaMask. Result: Success

In this case the user had his MetaMask account on a computer not a phone. He had cryptocurrency and also bought several NFTs. He’d lost access to his wallet, re-installed it and then realised that he no longer had his seed words. The user was based overseas and we were able to remotely log into his machine, download the data files necessary and then decrypt these to recover his seed words. He then opened his MetaMask account, and used the recovered seed words to reinstate his wallet complete with crypto and NFT’s.

Case 2 – Lost password and corrupt MetaMask. Result: Success

The user had their wallet stored on an iPhone. They had somehow corrupted their Metamask on their phone and then remembered they had crypto in the wallet that they wanted to retrieve. They no longer had their seed words but could remember their password. We asked the customer to ship their phone to us. Once received we downloaded the MetaMask data and were able to extract and decrypt code which when combined with their password re-established access to their account.

Case 3 – Deleted account and deleted backup. Result: Recovery not possible

The user had their MetaMask wallet stored on an iPhone, sync’d to a laptop computer and had also taken a photograph of his seed words that was also stored on his laptop. He had factory reset both the phone and the laptop. It’s helpful to think of a factory reset as something you’d use if you were going to sell your phone onto a 3rd party and needed to completely remove the data from it. The data the user required had been completely wiped from both the phone and his laptop. There were no backups in place either.
